DYW Evaluation: Employer Engagement

On Monday 13th March, Scottish Government published a report which evaluates DYW's effectiveness in working with employers: The Impact of Scotland's Developing Young Workforce Strategy on Employer Engagement. Rocket Science - an Edinburgh-based business management consultancy firm - were commissioned to carry out research between March and September 2022.

Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) North East’s core team and employer school coordinators worked with two HR managers from Anderson Anderson & Brown to support their recruitment programme. Through DYW North East, careers advisers from Skills Development Scotland and school staff also formed part of the effort of raising awareness about the opportunities among young people.

My World of Work Week Bucksburn Academy ASN Wing

The ASN Wing at Bucksburn undertook a whole weeks’ worth of activities designed to give their pupils an insight into the world of work. This was focused on providing pupils with an awareness of different sectors and boosting the pupil’s confidence around employability. Former pupils provided talks on the routes they took into employment and parents also supported by chatting to classes

As part of our ongoing collaboration with local partners, the DYW Glasgow regional group along with stakeholders at GCC, SDS and the Princes Trust designed a job market specifically aimed at those young people who were leaving school in summer 2022 and were currently still sitting in a ‘negative destination’.

DYW Roadshow November 2022

On Tuesday 8th November 2022, DYW Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian ran DYW Roadshow. This was our second event of its kind this year, and our first ever for Winter Leavers. The event brought together employers, further education, higher education, and training providers with the young people in our region to help them find their next step.

Macdonald Inchyra Hotel: Young people crucial to hotel success

The Macdonald Inchyra Hotel and Spa signed up to the Young Person’s Guarantee in July 2021. Engaging with young people is a key priority for the General Manager, Brett Ingle, and his team. Brett wanted to engage more with local schools and colleges, to raise awareness of the many careers in hospitality, and find a wider talent pool.

Barnardo's - Luna's story: From care to customer service

Luna is a young care experienced person who was first referred to Barnardo’s Works during the COVID-19 pandemic. Luna has had a tough start in life, and she has suffered from mental health issues. Before coming to Barnardo’s Works, Luna was studying in Aberdeen. However, she had to leave due to medical reasons and moved to Inverness. Luna speaks highly of the support she received during this difficult time, and in her personal and professional life ever since.

Highland Coast Hotels: Young people get a taste of careers in hospitality

Highland Coast Hotels have four unique hotels on the North Coast 500 in Scotland. Their Kylesku Hotel has recently signed up to the Young Person’s Guarantee. The hotel team are passionate about the hospitality industry, and its exciting careers. They are encouraging local young people to try a range of training and work placements at the hotel. These experiences are very useful as a basis for further or higher education, or for job applications.

No Wrong Path Campaign 2022

No Wrong Path is a social media campaign aiming to show young people receiving their exam results that there is #NoWrongPath to success.

Each year, on exam results day, employers across Scotland take to social media to share their career path from school to now using the hashtag #NoWrongPath.

Jayden Anderson, a 5th year student at North Berwick High School was on a work placement with DYW Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian as part of his Foundation Apprenticeship. Jayden wanted to show young people who DYW are and how they are here to help young people achieve your goals in life and set them up for the careers they want to pursue.

Looking at the Young Persons Guarantee

Emma Duncan is aiming to double the number of Young Person’s Guarantee sign ups and is doing so by including Young Person’s Guarantee in all conversations with employers. When canvassing new employers, Emma is discussing how employers can engage with DYW by sending them the Young Person’s Guarantee proforma and explaining that by completing any of the 5 Asks of the Young Person’s Guarantee, they will be successfully supporting young people to reach positive destinations.

Scottish and Southern Energy

Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has committed their support to the Young Person's Guarantee. SSE employs more than 10,000 employees across the UK and Ireland. They offer work placements to young people in Scotland facing additional barriers to employment. They do this in partnership with Barnardo's Works, an innovative youth employability programme.

Gleneagles Hotel: Apprenticeships and training for young people

Gleneagles Hotel signed up to the Young Person's Guarantee in 2021. Prompted by a tough year for the hospitality sector, the business saw a chance to be part of the solution. Emma Simpson, Director of People and Culture at Gleneagles, was determined that they’d take part in the Guarantee. She saw that helping young people succeed in the difficult economic circumstances would help both them and the sector.
