Barnardo’s Works helps unemployed young people from a wide range of backgrounds. They offer support to overcome some of the difficulties of getting and keeping jobs. The service helps some of the most disadvantaged young people. They gain the skills, experience and opportunities to access independent, sustainable employment. "We are a growth business in a sector with significant skills gaps, working towards net zero. Engaging with young people provides us with access to future talent and the skills we require." It addresses issues at the root of social exclusion and assists young people to overcome disadvantage and the impact of poverty. Young people who access the service are between 16 and 24, and many live in some of the most deprived communities.
SSE began working with Barnardo's in 2007. SSE helps to fund Barnardo’s to run an employability programme which prepares young people for the workplace. Once they have gained these skills, they attend a recruitment day and if successful join SSE on a six-month placement. During their placement they are supported by both their line manager and Barnardo’s case worker. We treat them like any other employee, and they are immersed in the SSE working environment. They engage with colleagues to develop the skills needed to support them towards employment. In October 2021 SSE provided 12 6-month placements and plan to provide a similar number again this October. As part of the Young Person's Guarantee, SSE are now offering the six-month work placement in more locations across Scotland. Through involvement with the Young Person's Guarantee, you're making an impact on the lives and career journeys of young people in Scotland. What are you waiting for?
