The inspirational talk focused on the Build Your Future programme, in which young people were tasked with ‘Reimagining Spaces.’ The young people who took part in the project were awarded with an SQA Level 5 Creative Industries Skills for Work qualification. Visit the Falkirk Herald to read more about this event, or visit the Build Your Future page to learn more about how you can get involved. The Construction Work Tasters programme also made the news this quarter, with The Daily Record showcasing a session held in partnership with DYW Lanarkshire & East Dunbartonshire and Enevate Homes. Through this event, young people gained insight to plumbing, electrical and joinery roles available at the factory, and what such jobs entail. Young people were also provided with the opportunity to apply for an apprenticeship. If you are a construction employer and would like to learn more about how you can connect with your future workforce, check out Construction Work Tasters. DYW Inverness & Central Highland partnered with Skills Development Scotland to deliver a Green Careers Expo – as mentioned in The Northern Times - bringing together over forty employers, training providers, educational institutions and partners. During the event, more than 600 young people learned about Green Energy, Green Careers and Green Pathways in their area. The Green Careers Expo was the first event of its kind in Scotland, aiming to educate young people on the 10,000 greens jobs that are expected to be available in the area over the next decade. Would you like to help educate young people on sustainable jobs of the future? If so, check out DYW Scotland’s My Climate Path programme. A Food & Drink Focus Through DYW Ayrshire, young people now have the opportunity to gain vocational qualifications and workplace skills in school, through three new projects: Sunshine Café, Market Garden and Marvellous Makers. The Ayr Advertiser details how the projects will allow young people to develop barista, horticulture and crafting skills. Barista skills became a focus in other parts of the country, with young people in Aberdeenshire and Moray gaining the SVQ Barista Skills Qualification, delivered by Aberdeen-based company, Caber Coffee, who work in partnership with DYW North East. On 12th March, Caber Coffee, in partnership with DYW North East, other organisations and stakeholders, held a Barista Challenge to showcase the fantastic work from young people involved in the project. Whilst the following project does not mention barista skills like its predecessors, Bellyeoman Primary School’s ‘community café’ won an award for their entrepreneurial efforts which were launched to raise funds for local elderly people within the DYW Fife region. DYW North East and DYW Moray supported further activities led by organisations within the food and drink sector. Reported by the Aberdeen Business News, Mackie’s have pledged to support more young people in Aberdeenshire, with support from DYW North East. Through partnering with two local schools, Mackie’s aims to help prepare young people for the world of work by hosting sessions dedicated to understanding payslips and everyday finances, whilst inspiring young people to consider various roles within the food and drink sector. In Moray, Gordon and MacPhail’s efforts to inspire their future workforce through a workplace visit which showed young biology students the processes behind creating whisky, was featured on Insider. School Leavers Set Another Record High with the Highest Proportion Ever in Work, Training or Study Reported by Scottish Government, the number of young people in work, training or further study three months after the end of the school year has reached a record high of 95.9%. The Attainment and Initial Leaver Destination statistics 2022-23 also show that the gap between those from the most and least deprived areas progressing after leaving school has continued to narrow and is now at a record low (3.7 percentage points). Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth said: “These figures show the highest proportion of Scotland’s young people are achieving positive destinations since records began and it is very encouraging to see so many people are securing work, training or further study. “We are committed to closing the poverty-related attainment gap and ensuring all of our young people have the same opportunities to progress in life, so I’m encouraged to see that the gap in relation to positive destinations has narrowed to a record low." The Highland Council celebrated their record high positive destinations by sharing how partnerships, including those with employers, have supported this success.
