National Updates Office Re-opens – Wednesday 3rd January After the festive break, DYW Scotland will return to office on Wednesday 3rd January. Upon our return to work, DYW Scotland will publish an article detailing some of the ways in which you can develop the young workforce in 2024. #PowerOfAnHourCampaign – Tuesday 30th January DYW Scotland are delighted to share the details of its latest national campaign: #PowerOfAnHour, which will take place on Tuesday 30th January 2023. At DYW, we believe in the power of an hour, and the lasting impact that a short amount of time can have on both young people and professionals who support them. The first of many Power of an Hour campaigns will celebrate the positive impact that mentoring has on young people and their mentors. Getting involved is simple thanks to a wide range of optional editable image templates available for mentors, mentees and mentoring organisations. Mentoring Young People Session – Tuesday 30th January, 10am Would you like to improve your mentoring skills? On 30th January, DYW Scotland is running a free employer training session: Mentoring Young People; Good Practice for Mentors: Tuesday 30th January, 10am During the session you will explore key mentoring skills and tools, and have an opportunity to practice with guidance and support from an expert facilitator. You will also receive a detailed guide packed full of practical hints and tips as well as resources for further learning. This workshop is designed for individuals responsible for supporting young people on work placements as well as individuals responsible for managing apprentices or young employees within their organisation. Regional Updates With twenty DYW Regional Groups, it is almost impossible to cover the wide array of events, workshops and DYW activities scheduled across the country. However, here is a quick overview of what’s happening in some regions: DYW Edinburgh, Midlothian & East Lothian Despite January being quieter than typical months, DYW Edinburgh, Midlothian & East Lothian have some fantastic school events - including college visits, interview events and workshops such as:
DYW Inverness & Central Highland DYW ICH are looking forward to the introduction of some new inspirational activities, alongside continuation of existing projects this January. S3 students from Inverness Royal Academy will benefit from a Presentation Skills workshop hosted by Brodies Solicitors’ Communications Manager, whilst S3 hair and beauty enthusiasts from Grantown Grammar school will learn new skills at a workshop delivered by multiple local businesses within the beauty industry. Other new events to note include activities by Stagecoach, Lush and Mikey’s Line Project. 2024 will see the continuation of many ongoing projects, including:
DYW Lanarkshire and East Dunbartonshire DYW LED’s partnership work continues in the new year as one of their team members participate as an external panel member for the VASLAN Employability Fund. The fund is provided by UK Shared Prosperity Fund from the UK Government as part of the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities. It aims to support grassroot organisations as part of employability provision in third sector. Teachers and educators are invited to ‘Making Scotland’s Future Engineering’ on 22nd January at Glasgow Science Centre. Attendees can explore the boundless opportunities within the dynamic engineering and manufacturing sectors in Scotland. This is a fantastic free CLPL (Career Long Professional Learning) opportunity for teachers. As educators, your role in shaping the aspirations of young minds is paramount, and this event has been designed to equip you with the knowledge and tools needed to inspire the next generation. Register for your free place – Making Scotland's Future Engineering - A careers event for teachers & educators. – Glasgow Science Centre, Mon 22 Jan 2024 3:45 PM - 6:00 PM (tickettailor.com) Greenfaulds High School and Cumbernauld Academy are delighted to host a Careers Event on 16th January, in Cumbernauld New Town Hall from 6pm – 8pm. Local and national employers and organisations are invited to join them on the night to inspire and engage with young people, parents and carers. Contact Aileen McGarry at [email protected] to get involved. DYW North East A variety of industry-led activity is set to take place within North East schools in the first month of 2024. This includes themed careers fairs, a talk for pupils on jobs that use a second language, and the judging and finale of an architecture project. At the end of the month, DYW North East will welcome employers across all sectors to a Business Breakfast on Recruiting and Employing Young People. The session will provide practical advice and guidance to help organisations provide a positive recruitment experience for young people – and better results for them as employers. The first quarter of the year will also see DYW North East launch its new sector frameworks for construction, employability and hospitality. Designed to make it even easier for employers to support young people, the frameworks are a structured menu of age-appropriate activities that industry professionals can tap into when planning work inspirations. Partnership work is also underway to create frameworks for the energy and health and social care sectors. DYW West DYW West have planned a range of activities which will take place throughout January. The new year welcomes new DYW School Coordinators to the DYW West team, so plenty of training will be underway. Young people in the region will benefit from employer site visits, including one at Linn Products. Employer events include an Inverclyde Employer Breakfast on Wednesday 31st January.
