The unseen professionals:
behind the scenes of the Construction site

Picture
Remember you can use the toolkit to work through the resources on these pages.
Professional roles within the Built Environment and Construction often go unseen by the public and are understood to require academic or vocational training. This can include studying at University or via a Graduate Apprenticeship programme.

Here individuals, who have followed this type of career pathway, share insight from their journeys into a range of careers, the skills they have developed and their advice for succeeding.
Professionals from within our partner organisations who have followed a Graduate Apprenticeship or University route talk about their careers to date.

From Architecture to Quantity Surveying, their career insight is a fascinating look at the different routes people choose to explore.

Thanks so CCG Scotland, Morrison Construction and Strathclyde University.

Discussion starters and activities to use with this film can be found in the Build Your Future Toolkit.

Spotlight on Building standards

The role of Building Standards is vital in any construction project.

Local authorities are responsible for granting permission for work to be done and for a completed building to be occupied.

My World of Work Live recently recorded a webisode with Danny Henderson of City of Edinburgh Council to find out more about his role and what Building Standards Officers actually do. You can also explore the short #NoWrongPath insights from his colleagues below:

This section provides further insight into the roles, skills and pathways of a professional in the Construction Industry.
“If you can’t see it you can’t be it. We want to showcase the whole construction supply chain, which is what we have tried to do with ‘Build Your Future’. If school pupils don’t know these potential careers exist within the built environment then they can’t pursue them.
