We signed up to the Young Person's Guarantee (YPG), as a lot of what we do is with to do with textiles, which has almost petered out to nothing in the UK. The skills we need aren’t being taught. We knew we had to find routes for staff. We looked at non-traditional routes — people with disabilities, barriers to work. People who don't have skills — if you can upskill them, you can make someone employable.

Barnardo's - Ellie's story

Ellie is 16 years old and she is a trainee Early Years Practitioner (EYP). She's doing a Modern Apprenticeship (MA) at a local nursery. Her journey started with her joining the Barnardo’s Explore & B’Leave programme in March 2021. At that point, she was not interested in school. Barnardo’s worked with her to set some realistic goals and to explore career options. Ellie then moved onto the Fit for Work Programme. She gained a lot from being on the programme and decided that she wanted to return to school after the summer.

This year the campaign coincided with National Inclusion Week and Young Persons Guarantee and was aimed at employers, parents, carers and young people.

Score Apprenticeship Awareness Event at Peterhead Academy

DYW North East facilitated an event where pupils at Peterhead Academy had a chance to meet with the Global Apprenticeship Manager from Score Group and discuss upcoming apprenticeship opportunities both in the engineering and business sector. In preparation for Scottish Apprenticeship Week and to support the Peterhead Academy Virtual Careers Fair, Score Group attended Peterhead Academy to inform pupils of the apprenticeship opportunities that will be advertised during Scottish Apprenticeship Week.

Launched in 2017, #NoWrongPath is a social media movement led by Developing the Young Workforce which provides inspiration and reassurance to young people receiving their exam results.

We recognise that some young people may feel disheartened by their exam results. We are aiming to demonstrate that many people in interesting job roles across Scotland may not have taken a straight, obvious or traditional path to get there - that there is #NoWrongPath.

Work Placement with Cameron Strachan Yuill

In May 2022, DYW Borders worked in partnership with Camerons Strachan Yuill Architects (CSY), Scottish Borders Council Education Department and Inspire Learning, to offer all the local secondary schools a unique weeklong virtual work placement. This opportunity was offered to pupils from S3 to S6 who had expressed an interest in a career in Architecture or Design which resulted in 20 pupils from 6 schools successfully gaining a place.

As part of the Young People Are Great campaign we are shining the spotlight on Ross McConnell. He joined the processing team at Mowi when he was just 18 and has developed a fulfilling career there. Mowi is the largest salmon farming company in Scotland, employing about 1,500 people.

Inspiring Entrepreneur's at Madras College

As part of DYW activities, Entrepreneur Me created and delivered a series of activities across three days to support new S1 pupils at Madras College in Fife. The aim for the event was to support the year group to develop teamwork and leadership skills within small teams, supported by a range of activities. Led by Matt Stewart, who has a wealth of experience in running enterprise events and workshops for young people across the UK, the events had a fantastic reception from pupils at the school.

Bringing together a collection of unique hotels on the North Coast 500 in Scotland is something of a burning ambition for the team at Highland Coast Hotels. One of their four hotels, Kylesku Hotel has recently committed their support to The Young Person’s Guarantee, and now they are looking to sign up their three other hotels this year. They believe they can offer different opportunities for partnership working with secondary schools and colleges.

Hundreds of Parents and Carers Join Apprenticeship Webinar

Over 400 parents and carers from across Scotland joined a webinar, which was hosted by Skills Development Scotland, to hear about Foundation, Modern and Graduate Apprenticeships and how work-based learning can open the door to a wide range of careers.

New Toolkit Helps Tech Firms Forge Links with Schools

Tech companies are being given the chance to help the next generation of school pupils enhance their digital technology skills thanks to a new toolkit detailing the support available from more than 10 different partners.

The Tech Industry in Schools toolkit brings together Scottish Government, Education Scotland, tech trade body ScotlandIS, the Scottish Tech Army, Developing the Young Workforce, Skills Development Scotland (SDS) and others to make it as easy possible for the tech industry to sign up to the myriad of education-related programmes available.
