More than a traditional careers fair, this evening event showed what is possible when schools, employers and partners work together with a shared purpose: helping young people make informed and confident decisions about their futures. For Forth Valley employers, it offered a clear example of the value of getting involved. Why Family-Focused Careers Events Matter Research highlights parents and carers as one of the strongest influences on a young person’s career decisions. Skills Development Scotland confirms that parents and carers are cited by young people as a key influence alongside teachers and careers advisers. Family careers events bring this evidence to life. By involving parents and carers directly, they create shared understanding, encourage informed conversations at home and ensure that pupils are supported by the people who matter most to them. An Evening of Real Opportunity Over the course of the evening, more than 500 pupils and family members engaged with over 61 employers, colleges and universities. The wide range of sectors represented, from construction and engineering to healthcare, utilities and further education, reflected the breadth of opportunity available across Forth Valley. For pupils, the event went far beyond collecting information. It gave them the chance to ask real questions, hear honest experiences and understand the many different pathways available, including apprenticeships, college, university and work-based learning. Parents and carers left with greater clarity and confidence, better equipped to support their child’s next steps. Pupils Leading the Way
The success of the event was also driven by the pupils themselves. Volunteer pupils played a vital role throughout the evening, welcoming guests, preparing and serving refreshments, supporting employers and ensuring everything ran smoothly. Their professionalism, teamwork and pride stood out. For employers, this offered a clear insight into the skills young people are already developing, including communication, organisation and responsibility, all of which are highly valued in the workplace. Why Employer Involvement Matters Taking part in events like the Clacks Family Careers Event is not only about giving something back to the community. It is also about investing in the future workforce. Employer involvement raises awareness of sectors and roles, challenges misconceptions about career pathways and builds strong relationships with schools and partners. Most importantly, it helps young people see real opportunities close to home and understand how their skills and interests can translate into meaningful careers. A Call to Action for Forth Valley Employers This event was, as Bruce Taylor, Depute Head Teacher at Lornshill Academy, described, “an evening for our entire school community to be proud of.” It was also a clear reminder of what’s possible when employers step into schools—not just as recruiters, but as partners in shaping futures. If you’re an employer in Forth Valley looking to make a meaningful impact, this is your invitation:
