TV & Broadcasting Recently, Channel 4 and The Talent People delivered a series of workshops to Portobello High School’s Higher and National 5 Media Studies pupils, supporting them to consider their existing skills alongside additional knowledge necessary for a career in TV and broadcasting. Throughout the series, pupils learned about the career journeys of those working in the industry, showcasing a variety of routes and pathways available. The event was a huge success and Portobello High School continues to inspire future creative professionals with an upcoming project where S2 Drama and S3 Media Studies pupils pitch a show to Channel 4. Interior Design & Branding S3 pupils at Knox Academy recently took on a six-week real-world design challenge set by Tangram Furnishers, an Edinburgh-based interior design studio, to create and brand a concept for a seaside cafe. Launched with a site visit to Tangram’s studio, the project gave students hands-on experience in areas like client briefs, concept development, CAD design, and pitching. Developed in partnership with the school and supported by DYW Edinburgh, Midlothian & East Lothian, the initiative not only brought the curriculum to life but also helped pupils build key skills in creativity, communication, and confidence whilst exploring potential careers in the design and manufacturing sectors. Drama As part of The Royal High School’s My Future Friday series, pupils recently heard from Glynis Wozniak of Wozniak Management - a talent agency in the performing arts sector. This weekly, opt-in session invites industry professionals to share their career journeys with students from S1 to S6, helping them explore a wide range of career paths. During Glynis’s visit, Drama and Music pupils gained valuable insights into the realities of working in the creative industries and left feeling inspired and better informed about practical steps they could take toward similar careers, highlighting the impact of linking classroom learning with real-world experience. Journalism As part of their Level 6 Journalism course, S5 and S6 students at Penicuik High School welcomed Liam Eunson, a reporter for Midlothian View, who shared his journey into journalism and offered insights into the realities of the profession. From choosing article topics to writing headlines and feature pieces, Liam provided practical advice and real examples of his published work, helping students connect classroom learning to real-world media careers. The session was both engaging and informative, with students describing it as inspirational and timely as they prepared to write their own feature articles. Why DYW is important for inspiring the next generation of creative professionals At last year’s DYW Roadshow, we spoke to Katie, Creative Learning Producer for Edinburgh Playhouse. Katie provided valuable insight on the importance of attending careers events and taking part in DYW activities to inspire the next generation of future talent in the creative industries.
