1. Raise awareness among young people, parents, and educators of the breadth of roles and range of pathways available within the heritage sector while addressing common misconceptions.
2. Inspire young people to consider a career in heritage. 3. Encourage and support employers across the historic environment sector to engage with education. Although this week is packed full of engagement activity, with days of focussed activity and a social media campaign, the week can also be a platform for even more school engagement with the Heritage Sector further down the line. DYW works with schools year round and can support employers to engage with education throughout the year. After all Heritage Careers are not just for Heritage Careers Week! Collaboration and partnership working Heritage Careers Week has been a collaborative effort, bringing together employers, membership bodies from the heritage sector, educators, Skills Development Scotland and DYW to form a steering group to plan and coordinate the week. The young person’s voice hasn’t been lost in the planning process either. Thanks to support from Historic Environment Scotland, the planning group were able to consult with young people on what they felt would make a great heritage careers week. The views of this diverse range of stakeholders has been pivotal in everything from social media posts, the themes of the online DYW Live activity, and even the brand a logo for the week. Heritage Careers Week: DYW Live Across the country DYW Regional Groups are working with employers and partners to facilitate Heritage Careers Week activity in schools at a local level and bringing the sector to life in the classroom. To compliment this, we have been working with colleagues at DYW Live to plan 4 webinars for young people aged 12-25, taking place today, on Thursday 31st October. The content of the four DYW Live sessions have brought together ideas of young people, industry and education to ensure that the sessions are relevant, up to date and importantly delivered in a way that engages young people in the subject. Following consultation with young people on what they would like to hear about in relation to heritage careers, we are able to shape the sessions with support from those representing the sector to plan four sessions on the following themes:
During consultation with young people there was also a common thread running through these discussions about who they wanted to hear from during heritage careers week. Not only did they want to hear from people working in the sector: they wanted to hear from other young people about their journey into the heritage sector, and this is something we have strived to do, with over half of the panellists being under 25. Additional resources As part of Heritage Careers Week there have been a number of resources created to support conversations with young people about careers in the historic environment sector and these are hosted on Marketplace.
