Discipline, Leadership, and Lift-Off: What the RAF Can Teach Us About Workforce Readiness13/10/2025
At its core, a successful career in any sector—whether it’s construction, healthcare, tech, or defence—requires more than just knowledge. It demands teamwork, discipline, adaptability, and communication under pressure. These are precisely the qualities tested and nurtured in military environments. And they’re exactly what Wallace High School’s recent RAF workshop helped young people discover firsthand. Mission Accepted: RAF Engagement in Action Warrant Officer Paul Davies visited Wallace High School to run a focused session with pupils interested in joining the armed forces. After hearing about career paths in the RAF, students were split into teams and given two high-stakes challenges: erect a satellite tower and rescue a downed pilot. Each task had clear constraints—tight deadlines, strict instructions, and minimal room for error. Participants had to work together to succeed, drawing on problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills that mirror real-world military (and workplace) demands. This kind of immersive experience not only introduces young people to armed forces careers—it also lets them develop confidence and capability through hands-on challenges with real-world relevance. Ready for Take-Off: The Value of Real-World Readiness
Workshops like the one at Wallace High School offer more than just an introduction to the RAF—they show young people what it means to lead, to plan, and to execute under pressure. These aren’t just military skills—they’re future workforce skills.
