One powerful approach is through immersive, challenge-based experiences that combine teamwork, technology, and creativity — just like the recent Shipwrecked event, delivered in partnership by DYW Forth Valley, Daydream Believers, and BIMA Scotland. Skills in Action: The Shipwrecked Experience Nearly 100 young people from schools across the region were faced with this challenge: Imagine you’ve been shipwrecked on a remote island. Your team must design a sustainable, off-grid habitat using creativity, collaboration — and generative AI tools. What followed was a full day of dynamic problem-solving. Students worked in teams to design solutions to real-world issues such as energy, water, shelter, and community living. They used AI platforms like ChatGPT to brainstorm ideas, structure their presentations, and develop content — while image-generation tools helped them bring their concepts to life visually. From vertical farming towers made of recycled materials to AI-assisted solar water systems, the ideas were as ambitious as they were practical. The result? A powerful combination of technical exploration, ethical AI use, and 21st-century skills development — all rolled into a single, engaging event. What Young People Gained
Experiences like Shipwrecked help young people:
How Employers Can Support and Benefit. Here are four key ways businesses can support initiatives like Shipwrecked and benefit from the skills they foster: 1. Recognise Tech-Enhanced Learning as Real Experience When reviewing applications, ask about digital or challenge-based learning experiences. Projects like Shipwrecked involve real-world thinking and transferable skills that matter. 2. Connect with Local Partners Work with schools and organisations like DYW to co-design events, offer industry insight, or volunteer as mentors and judges. A one-day involvement can spark a lifetime of confidence. 3. Equip Your Teams with AI Awareness Shipwrecked showed just how powerful generative AI can be as a creative partner. Provide your teams — and future hires — with safe, practical exposure to these tools. Pro tip for employers: Use AI in-house for ideation and internal upskilling. Offering “AI exploration” days or low-stakes challenges can build digital confidence and creativity across your teams. 4. Inspire with Real-World Problems Young people are hungry to solve problems that matter. Bring your sustainability goals or innovation challenges into schools — you might be surprised by the solutions they come up with. A Smarter Way to Develop Future Talent The Shipwrecked event wasn’t just about creativity — it was about unlocking confidence, curiosity, and courage in the next generation. As employers, when you invest time and expertise into experiences like this, you are not just helping pupils — you are future-proofing our own workforce. Want to get involved?
