Through a wide range of employer-led experiences, DYW is giving young people opportunities to explore careers in sustainable industries, learn about green practices, and see first-hand how innovation is shaping the workplaces of tomorrow. Learning from Scotland’s First Passivhaus Schools In the Edinburgh, Midlothian & East Lothian region, Kier Construction Scotland have delivered work tasters as part of their One inspiring example is the Constructing Futures project, where young people visited the construction site of one of Scotland’s first Passivhaus schools. Passivhaus buildings are designed to use very little energy for heating or cooling, demonstrating how the construction sector is responding to the climate emergency. Next month, it’s Warmworks and Vaillant’s turn, as they engage and inspire the next generation on heat pump technology and careers in the low-carbon heating sector. Through Construction Work Tasters, pupils gained a unique insight into sustainable building techniques and the wide range of green careers available in construction - from engineering and design to project management and renewable technologies. If your organisation would like to connect with your future workforce and inspire the next generation of construction professionals, why not offer a Construction Work Taster? Find out more here. Creativity for Climate Action DYW also supports young people to think creatively about sustainability. As part of the Sustainable Development Goals T-shirt Competition, pupils were challenged to design a T-shirt that highlights the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This initiative, in collaboration with ACS Clothing and UN Global Compact Network UK, encouraged young people to explore global issues such as responsible consumption, climate action and social justice - while expressing their own vision for change. Congratulations to Alva from The Compass School for their winning design, which will be presented to Scottish Parliament on 20th November 2025. If your organisation is interested in inspiring young people through creative projects, particularly related to fashion, check out My Fashion Path – one of two strands of activity within the My Climate Path programme. Showcasing Local, Seasonal and Sustainable Produce In the North East, DYW has helped showcase how sustainability can start close to home. At the Seasonal and Sustainable Produce Event, young people engaged with local food producers to learn about the benefits of using seasonal, home-grown ingredients. This event not only promoted the importance of reducing food miles but also highlighted career opportunities in Scotland’s growing sustainable food and drink sector. Summit Leads the Way on Climate Action In the Forth Valley region, Falkirk High School became the hub of a powerful learning experience as it hosted the Falkirk Pupil Climate Summit. The event brought together around 80 young people from seven local secondary schools, all united by a shared purpose - to deepen their understanding of climate change, explore sustainable practices, and discover the exciting world of green jobs and career pathways. Employers and partners played a vital role in inspiring the next generation. From delivering hands-on workshops, to answering questions as part of an expert panel, to sparking conversations at the job expo, they gave pupils a real insight into the skills and opportunities shaping the green economy. Sustainability Group Plans Large Scale Event in Moray DYW Moray’s dedicated Sustainability Group has brought together an inspiring group of organisations including SSEN Transmission, Elixir Distillers, and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), to name just a few. The region is currently planning an exciting large scale event for secondary school pupils - aiming to spark conversations about sustainability, climate change, and the many opportunities in Moray, while linking global challenges to a local context. This event will be about more than information, it’s about inspiration - bridging the gap between young people and sustainable careers, opening doors to new possibilities and helping young people imagine the role they could play in shaping a greener tomorrow! Working Together for a Greener Future These examples reflect DYW Scotland’s ongoing commitment to preparing young people for the jobs of the future - many of which will focus on tackling climate change. By connecting employers and educators, we are helping to create a workforce ready to innovate, adapt and thrive in a low-carbon economy. This Scottish Climate Week, we celebrate the energy, creativity and determination of Scotland’s young people, and the many employers who are supporting them on their journey. Together, we can build a sustainable workforce that delivers positive change for our communities, our economy, and our planet.
